Liam Brown is a six year old boy living in Memphis, Tennessee. He has two loving parents, Violeta and Chris, and one big brother, Alex, who all work together to provide as much love as they possibly can for him. That’s the most important thing any child can receive, and he’s got it! Giving love to Liam is the easiest job his family faces today. Liam was created to be very special, not like just any child; he carries one extra chromosome. This chromosome creates a world of challenges for Liam; challenges that his family can’t always face alone, not even with all the love in the world. However, all the love in the world can help them get him to a school that specializes in his particular special need. This school happens to be located just twenty minutes from his house! This school is called the Madonna Learning Center, and they offer all the teachers, therapists, and training Liam needs, all in one building. ….. Our public school system here in Memphis would like to place Liam in a ‘Functional Skills’ classroom. This would mean that the public schools believe him to be capable of learning functional skills, like eating, drinking, using the restroom, communicating on a basic level. Yes, that is true, but could that be all? What about after he learns those skills? Then what? These are all skills he has yet to obtain, but we believe anything is possible with Liam. We dream of Liam asking questions, making observations about the world around him, creating loving relationships among his peers, working to help his family, working in his community, and providing for himself as he matures. This dream isn’t a fantasy. This dream has the possibility of coming true some day. The president of our organization, Kim Echols, happens to be a former Special Education teacher within our public school system here in Memphis. Mrs. Echols believes these ‘Functional Skills’ classrooms are not the best place for Liam to be able to achieve these goals. Kim Echols and our entire team at the Isaiah Institute believes in dreams. Which is why we would like you to consider supporting our current mission to finance his tuition at the Madonna Learning Center for his first year of school. Let’s see what could happen in just one year! |
